ACTION: Notice of Final Decision
SYNOPSIS: OMB is announcing its final decision to adopt the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) revisions for 2002 as recommended by the Economic Classification Policy Committee (ECPC) in OMB's solicitation of comments on April 20, 2000. In addition, OMB is adopting one change not included in the April 20, 2000, notice -- moving Map and Atlas Publishing from Industry 511199, All Other Publishing, to Industry 511130, Book Publishing.

EFFECTIVE DATE: Federal statistical data published on or after January 1, 2002, should be published using the 2002 NAICS United States codes. Agencies may adopt the 2002 NAICS earlier at their discretion. Publication of a 2002 NAICS United States Manual is planned for January 2002.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: On April 20, 2000, OMB published the ECPC's recommendations on the creation of new industries in the construction and wholesale trade sectors, modifications to the national industries for department stores and nonstore retailers, and other changes identified as necessary during the initial implementation of NAICS 1997, and solicited comments.
After taking into consideration the comments submitted on the April 20, 2000, recommendations, and after consultation with Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Estadistica, Geografiia e Informatica (INEGI) and Statistics Canada, OMB decided to adopt the ECPC's April 20, 2000, recommendations except it has decided to make one change that was not included in the ECPC's recommendation: move Map and Atlas Publishing from Industry 511199, All Other Publishing, to Industry 511130, Book Publishing.
