ACTION: Issuance of Executive Order

SYNOPSIS: On June 1, 2004, President Bush issued Executive Order (EO) 13342 to establish Centers for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives at the Departments of Commerce and Veterans Affairs and the Small Business Administration "to help the federal government coordinate a national effort to expand opportunities for faith-based and other community organizations and to strengthen their capacity to better meet America's social and community needs..."

EFFECTIVE DATE: June 1, 2004.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: On January 29, 2001, President Bush issued EO 13198 directing the Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Justice, and Labor to "establish within their respective departments a Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives" to "coordinate department efforts to eliminate regulatory, contracting, and other programmatic obstacles to the participation of faith-based and other community organizations in the provision of social services."

On December 12, 2002, President Bush issued EO 13280, Responsibilities of the Department of Agriculture and the Agency for International Development With Respect to Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, to direct the Department of Agriculture and the Agency for International Development to establish Centers for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.

EO 13342 directs the Department of Commerce, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Small Business Administration to establish Centers for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.
